My mom is an active member of her church, Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Innisfail, and approached me early in the summer about potentially volunteering my time to help them build a more efficient and effective website for their parish. The goal was to build a site that was easy to find essential information, and provide an online source for prayer, faith, and online donations.
Father Liju Jose was excited to start the project and had a good handle on the information he wished to have shown on the site, which is always extremely helpful. He wanted to expand on the information that was currently available by providing direct access to daily prayers, readings, and other faith-inspiring content. After my discussion with Father, it was clear that website organization and structure would be the biggest challenge of this particular project. There was a ton of information that needed to be properly sorted and displayed throughout the site.
The creative process started at a different point for me this time. The church had recently been rebuilt due to some structural problems with the old church – that I spent a few hours in during my childhood. So with that in mind, I started by taking pictures of the new building. As mentioned above, the organization of the site was of the utmost importance, so working with Father Jose, I was able to properly structure the site.
Once all the information was gathered it was just a matter of formatting it correctly and adding a combination of stock imagery and the photos that were taken to provide visual interest to the information.
The final design is a mobile-friendly, clean, and simple design that is easy to update for members of the Parish. It clearly lays out the history of the church, how to donate online, and where to find spiritual information in times of need. I have heard some great feedback from the members of the church, which is always a great thing!
